Liat, along with her husband Aviv, both 49, faced the unimaginable when Hamas terrorists attacked their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7. Aviv, a key figure in the kibbutz's agricultural operations and an artist, responded to the initial threat as part of the security team but was tragically murdered during the assault.
Liat's sought refuge in their home's shelter, and maintained phone contact with her parents and friends as events developed that morning. Her final call that day was at approximately 12:30pm, to a friend living on Kibbutz Shomrat. Aviv’s phone was traced to Gaza on October 8, and friends said that the Atzili house was burned but there was no blood or signs of struggle.
The ordeal did not spare the wider family, with Aviv's mother, Telma Atzili, enduring her own harrowing experience by hiding from the terrorists. The resilience of the family is further highlighted by the survival tactics of Liat and Aviv's children during the attack, showcasing a grim reality where even the youngest must navigate survival.
Liat's release on November 29, facilitated by a temporary ceasefire, brought an end to her captivity but also ushered in new grief, as Aviv was confirmed dead on December 1st.
